My New Years Resolution: Update this blog once a week.
Luckily, since it is already the third week in January, I have already broken my New Years Resolution, so I have no pressure now. Hopefully, this lack of pressure will allow me to actually keep up with the blog. A lot has gone on over the past couple of months, so I'm going to summarize all of it in this blog.November: Always wear a helmet!
November was a great month. We just started to get some snow, got to celebrate with my good friend Andy, who got married, and I got to visit Boise for Thanksgiving. Unfortunately, one of those weekends, I took a Friday off to ski with Will at Keystone. It was a perfect spring day. It was so warm, I just wore a hoodie, decided to ski my massively scary/fun slalom skis, and not wear a helmet. This was one of the first days in many years that I have not worn a helmet, but it was so warm and I was just skiing groomers, so I didn't give it a second thought. On the second run, I fell. This wasn't one of my normal falls. It was definitely on of hardest falls I have had in my life skiing. I was skiing between 40 mph -50 mph when I hit a turn perfectly on the sweet spot of the skis. To give some background, if you have professional level race skis, which my slalom skis are, your skis can "bounce" your legs from one turn to another, exactly like bouncing on a trampoline. It's hard to do, but when it happens, it's great. Anyways, I hit this trampoline affect going 40-50 perfectly. The next thing I knew, my boots where above my head (this is what I hope I looked like). I landed on my back in a perfectly, which allowed the back of my head to hit the hard snow with maximum velocity. When I came to, my hat and one pole was on the left side of the slope, while my other pole and goggles where on the other side of the hill.
After a minute, two random guys helped gather my things and I was able to stand up. I felt fine, or so I thought, and started down the hill. I made it about 50 feet, when I tried to make my first turn. Instead of turning, I just fell to the ground. At that point, I knew I wasn't right. I was able to make it down the hill, sliding sideways the entire way. After two hours, I felt okay to drive back to the condo. Eight days later, the headache finally dissipated. It was a long week, especially at work, staring at a computer screen, but everything is back to normal.
This was the most long-winded way for me to tell you, always wear a helmet skiing!
December: LA, more skiing, but still no snow
December involved more great traveling, and some good skiing. I made it back on the slopes 5 weeks after my concussion. I was a little nervous. Not nervous about falling, just nervous that the speed and bumps of skiing would rattle my head enough to bring back the headaches. Nothing! It was like nothing happened, which was perfect. Unfortunately, we did not get much snow in December while I was there, but the skiing was still great.Luckily, I was able to make it back to Erie for eight days over Christmas. Of course, the day I left was when it started to snow, but Christmas in Erie is one of the only things that trumps powder. Christmas was great. Erie actually got 7 inches of snow one day, so it felt like Christmas. I got a some great ski and bike equipment, but the major thing I am excited about is a new camera. I have been taking pictures with my phone, but the landscape in Colorado deserves more than a camera phone. Hopefully I will be able to post some good pictures soon.
New Years and January
I spent New Years in Breckenridge. It was a great weekend with everyone being able to come up and celebrate. Breckenridge even had fireworks. It was a pretty cool setting, seeing fireworks over the slopes. The following weekends got cold, real cold. Last weekend, I took Friday off to ski Wolf Creek with a co-worker. I drove 10 hours round-trip, got between 20-30 great turns, and got frostbite all over my cheeks, but it was worth it. The temperature was 2 degrees F, but with consistent 20-30 mph winds, it felt a lot colder. Even though we were skiing shin to mid-thigh deep snow, 8 runs was all we could handle. It still may have been too much. For the past week, it looks like I put make-up on. Luckily, it has started to fade/fall off. Hopefully the next trip down to WC will be warmer.
Let's see how long this broken resolution lasts!
